may i introduce myself:
dj cem, male, 32 yrs. // DJ SINCE 1997 / infected by rarefunk and 60's soul dj cem started his career in the well known studio 672-club in cologne. the time was right, the people tight- it was maybe the heaviest funk'n'breaks-party in cologne in the late 90's. but evolution never stops, and so his dj-set. always a big fan of hiphop-music since RUN DMC 's "raising hell" (his first hiphop-tape(!) in 1989) he knew the sounds must be connected... mixing oldschool-funk with hiphop from the golden & the new era, ignoring any kind of dogma, all styles galore! if the beats's fresh, it has to be played. the main styles in his set: rare funk (big up fela kuti), straight & mellow hiphop/rap (big up nicolay & common), reggae (big up sizzla) & modern soul (big up jill scott & alice russell).
besides dj-ing he also organizes conterts & jams in cologne with acts like promoe/ looptroop and smith & mighty for example.
within the years his bookings increase a lot. he playes in nearly every big (and small) city in germany, he had the chance to spin @ the legendary PARADISO in amsterdam, in switzerland & austria. but more explorations will be made ..
since september 2002 dj cem promotes his new resident night in cologne:
BEATPACKERS. The club (www.subway-der-club.de) has the perfect size (about 250 p) and a perfect vibe. just after a few weeks the club was packed! the crowd goes mad on adult hiphop (i know it sound funny but it fits), organic breaks and conscious reggae & dancehall. and still, after 3 years, the athmosphere & the fire is on top! dj cem invites guest dj's & mc's like MED, EDO G., DJ REVOLUTION, DJ VADIM, TAJAI (souls of mischief), QUANTIC, SCRATCH (the roots) & J.RAWLS and guess what happens? EVERYBODY'S FREAKIN OUT! and so the BEATPACKERS never stops. stay tuned
BEATPACKERS is not just a partyconcept- it's also his name as a producer. his first release (breakaway), a remix on unique records , was played by radiostations from LosAngeles to Moscow. a quite good start into this game. his first album, a 6- track ep, is nearly finished and will be released around august 2006. don't ask me how i call my sound. it's slow, it's fast, it's hiphop, it's not hiphop. a mpc 2000 and some live instruments- that's what it is.
